Our challenge was to raise the curtain on the world’s greatest sporting event in a 30-min daytime on-field show.

We celebrated South Africa’s diversity and passionate spirit in a colourful outpouring of joy and celebration. The 1500-strong cast, drawn from local communities, embraced children as young as five and grandmothers well into their sixties.

Highlights of the show included a giant replica of the iconic ‘calabash’ stadium, a magical reveal of the African continent, a colourful stylised baobab tree and the tournament logo delightfully revealed by 750 children. A giant dung beetle playing football stole the show.

Watched by half a billion people across the world, the extravaganza won rave reviews from the international press and filled millions of South Africans with pride.
