We staged the 2014 final of the Red Bull X-Fighters freestyle motor-cross world tour, hosted for the first time on sub-Saharan soil.
Negotiating at the highest level, we got approval to truck 12 000 tons of sand onto the lawns of the iconic Union Buildings in Pretoria and built the largest motor-cross course of the global tour. All infrastructure was brought in: power, security, medical, production and media facilities, kitchens, toilets, park-and-ride, and we built the largest temporary grandstand in the country for 22 000 spectators.
A fifteen-minute opening ceremony, comprising local song and dance, welcomed the world to our shores. Top local artists also entertained the crowds between competition rounds.
The event hit the front pages of 10 local publications and was broadcast in 32 countries, with viewership figures reaching over 76 million. Red Bull International, athletes and spectators unanimously agreed that this was a world-class event, and the success prompted the Red Bull Global tour organisers to bring the tour back to South Africa the following year. Once again we staged the mammoth production to the delight of freestyle motor-cross fans the world over.
